Ozark Howler Sighted In Lurton, Arkansas
The town of Lurton, Arkansas isn't much of a town, by the standards of people on the coast who are used to cities that stretch on block by block, with a convenience store on every corner. Lurton isn't really on the way to or from anywhere. It's in Newton County, about 20 miles north of Interstate 40, the Russellville exit. I guess you could say that Lurton is downright inconvenient, the way that some people look at things.
There's one thing Lurton is extremely convenient for, though. That's for sighting the Ozark Howler - a strange creature that's been known to local folklore for generations. There's even a good geocache of the Ozark Howler out there.
My sister-in-law was working on the Census around the Lurton area last year, and she met a lot of great people there, most of whom didn't want to just give her their vital family statistics, but a cup of coffee and a chat too. It was in one such chat, on a picnic table in front of a trailer to the southwest of Lurton proper, that she was told of the Ozark Howler. A boy from the family, named Geff, just under 10 years of age, gave her a picture of what he claimed to have seen of the Ozark Howler himself.
Here is a copy of the picture the boy drew. You be the judge.
